Course Information
Often referred to as a Food Handlers certificate, this course provides the knowledge and training to use personal hygiene practices that prevent food contamination and food-borne illnesses. It is ideal for hospitality workers across Melbourne and the Hunter Valley, including Cessnock and the Newcastle region. The course covers following organisational procedures and identifying and controlling food hazards.
This training increases your confidence and equips you to safely handle food and food contact surfaces (such as cutlery, plates, and bowls) in your daily work.

- Bar, food, and beverage attendants
- Room attendants (in some cases)
- Front office staff (in some cases)
You will learn hygienic food handling practices in line with organisational procedures, including:
- Basic aspects of Commonwealth, state, or territory food safety laws, standards, and codes
- Health issues likely to cause a hygiene risk relevant to food safety
- Hygiene actions to prevent food-borne illnesses
- Effective hand-washing procedures
- When hand-washing is required
- Effective personal health and hygiene practices
- Major hygiene-related causes of food contamination and food-borne illnesses
- Procedures for reporting hygiene risks and unsafe work practices, including personal health issues
This training ensures you can provide your customers with a safe food experience.
These skills are applicable in workplaces, homes, and community settings and assist in meeting workplace safety compliance.

Award Issued:
Students who successfully complete both the theoretical and practical assessment components of this nationally recognised training will be awarded the statement of attainment for:

Course Delivery:
This course is delivered face to face and requires the following:
- Online Learning Module: Approximately 4-6 hours to complete.
- Face-to-Face Practical Assessment: Approximately 2 hours.
- Course Enrolment Window: 90 days. You have a maximum of 90 days to complete both online and practical components.
- Assessments: Submitted through our online learning portal.

Prerequisite Units:
- You will be required to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Assessment as part of your enrolment process
- There are no additional prerequisite units

All Registered Training Organisations are required, as a mandatory part of your enrolment process, to assess your language, literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy (LLND) skills.
We administer these tests online to verify if you have the necessary skills to complete this course. If you successfully complete these tests, you will be automatically allowed to complete your enrolment and pay for your course.
If your LLND level does not meet the requirements for the course, we will contact you to discuss the steps forward depending on the level assessed. This may include additional pre-learning material or a referral to a specialist LLND service.
