Course Information
This unit will train the participant with the knowledge and skills required to safely work at heights.
This unit applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take responsibility for the quality of work outcomes..
Specific licensing requirements may relate to this competency, including requirements for refresher training. Information should be obtained from the relevant national/state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authority.
You will learn how to:
- implement the key legislation required to work safely at heights and the key policies, statutory and regulatory authority requirements, procedures and documentation required to work safely at heights.
- use the principles and techniques for work safely at heights, including heights safety systems and safe work methods.
- understand the principles and techniques for identifying names and functions of equipment, components and materials.
- understand the principles and techniques for complying with equipment manufacturer instructions and specifications.
- safely shift and handle tools and materials.
- apply the principles and techniques for identifying relevant hazards and emergencies.
- apply techniques for coordinating and communicating job activities with others.
You will learn how to correctly fit a harness and use the correct lanyard or SRD for the job
You will also participate in at least two height activities.
You can use these skills in your workplace, the home or in community settings.
The Working at Heights Association of Australia (WAHA) advises that you should update this course every two years to maintain currency
Is it possible to do this course fully online? NO, the Unit requirements, Safework and WAHA state that the course requires actual physical hands demonstration of the skills required.

Students who successfully complete both the theoretical and practical assessment components of this nationally recognised training will be awarded the statement of attainment for:

Course Delivery:
This course utilises a Mixed Mode format and requires the following:
- Online Learning Module: Approximately 3-4 hours to complete.
- Face-to-Face Practical Assessment: Approximately 4 hours.
- Practical Assessment Sessions are held in Melbourne ONLY.
- Course Enrolment Window: 90 days. You have a maximum of 90 days to complete both online and practical components.
- Assessments: Submitted through our online learning portal.
- Learning Materials: Provided via our online learning portal.
- Equipment: Provided for all practical assessments.

- Special Requirements:
- Note this is a physical activity. You will be required to fit a harness correctly, be suspended on a safety line, climb ladders and structures. You will also be required to work at a height of approximately 3 metres.
- You must not have a fear of heights.
- Candidates must weigh less than 150kg (due to harness weight limits). If you weigh more than this, please call us prior to booking this course.
- Please ensure you wear comfortable work-type clothing appropriate for the activities and covered footwear with a defined heel (preferably safety boots).
Prerequisite Units:
- None, however we strongly recommend that the person holds a Construction Induction White Card prior to enrolling
Learner Requirements
To complete this course, you will need:
- A computer or laptop with internet access.
- A web browser (like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge).
- A valid personal email address (shared addresses are not allowed). If you don't have one, consider creating a free Gmail account here.
- Access to:
- A digital camera or phone with camera facilities
- A webcam or phone with video/audio facilities
All Registered Training Organisations are required, as a mandatory part of your enrolment process, to assess your language, literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy (LLND) skills.
We administer these tests online to verify if you have the necessary skills to complete this course. If you successfully complete these tests, you will be automatically allowed to complete your enrolment and pay for your course.
If your LLND level does not meet the requirements for the course, we will contact you to discuss the steps forward depending on the level assessed. This may include additional pre-learning material or a referral to a specialist LLND service.
