Course Information
Often known as wilderness first aid, our nationally recognised HLTAID013 Remote Area First Aid course provides the knowledge and training to manage a casualty in a remote or isolated site over an extended period until medical assistance arrives. This training is essential for anyone working or travelling in areas where emergency service response may be delayed.
You will learn advanced skills in patient assessment, extended care, and how to improvise equipment. The course covers managing a cardiac arrest, performing CPR, using an AED, and treating a number of critical conditions, including:
With hands-on training available in Melbourne (Cheltenham) and Newcastle (Sandgate), you'll gain the confidence to provide immediate help until paramedics arrive.
- Life-threatening bleeding requiring tourniquets and haemostatic dressings
- Environmental impacts like hypothermia, hyperthermia, and dehydration
- Fractures, dislocations, and sprains using appropriate immobilisation techniques
- Head, neck and spinal injuries
- Allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
- Snake and spider bites
You can use these skills in your workplace, the home or in community settings as well as in locations beyond the reach of timely medical assistance.
The Code of Practice: First aid in the workplace advises that you should update this course every 3 years to maintain currency.
The Australian Resuscitation Council advises that you should update the CPR component (HLTAID009) of this course every 12 months.
Award and Delivery Details
Award Issued:
Upon successful completion of both the theoretical and practical assessments for this nationally recognised training, students will be awarded a Statement of Attainment for:
- HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- HLTAID010 - Provide basic emergency life support
- HLTAID011 - Provide first aid
- HLTAID013 - Provide first aid in remote or isolated site
Course Delivery:
This course utilises a Mixed Mode format and requires the following:
- Online Learning Module: Approximately 4-6 hours to complete.
- Face-to-Face Practical Assessment: Approximately 8 hours.
- Course Enrolment Window: You have a maximum of 90 days to complete both online and practical components.
- Assessments: Submitted through our online learning portal.
- Learning Materials: Provided via our online learning portal.
- Equipment: Provided for all practical assessments.

- Special Requirements:
- Perform CPR on adult and infant manikins for at least 2 minutes each (physical activity).
- Ability to kneel on the floor for extended periods is required. If unable to do so, you may not be able to complete the course.
- Wear comfortable clothing suitable for the activities.
Prerequisites & Learner Requirements
Prerequisite Units:
- You will be required to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Assessment as part of your enrolment process.
- There are no additional prerequisite units.
Learner Requirements
To complete this course, you will need:
- A computer or laptop with internet access.
- A modern web browser (like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge).
- A valid personal email address (shared addresses are not allowed).
LLND Assessment
All Registered Training Organisations are required, as a mandatory part of your enrolment process, to assess your language, literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy (LLND) skills.
We administer these tests online to verify if you have the necessary skills to complete this course. If you successfully complete these tests, you will be automatically allowed to complete your enrolment and pay for your course.
