
Course Information
This course provides you with the knowledge and training to provide a first aid response to a casualty in a remote or isolated site over an extended period of time until medical assistance is provided, or evacuation occurs.
It gives you the skills to take control and provide immeadiate and extended help to a patient until the patient can be extricated.
You will learn how to deal with provide first aid in situations where immeadiate emergency service response or medical assistance is likely to be delayed. You will learn how to manage a cardiac arrest, do CPR at the correct rate, use the AED and treat a number of conditions including:
- allergic reactions
- basic care of a wound, including cleaning and dressing
- environmental impacts, including hypothermia, hyperthermia, dehydration and heat stroke
- fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains, using appropriate immobilisation techniques for remote situations and appropriate equipment improvisations
- respiratory distress, including asthma
- anaphylaxis
- nosebleed
- non-life-threatening bleeding
- life threatening bleeding requiring use of tourniquets and haemostatic dressings
- choking
- snake and spider bite
- fractures, sprains and strains
- head, neck and spinal injuries
- shock
This will ensure you can provide the patient with the best opportunity to survive when help is not readily available.
You will also participate in a post-incident debrief and provide verbal reports to the paramedics.
You can use these skills in your workplace, the home or in community settings as well as in locations beyond the reach of timely medical assistance.
The Code of Practice: First aid in the workplace advises that you should update this course every 3 year to maintain currency
The Australian Resuscitation Council advises that you should update the CPR component HLTAID009) of this course every 12 months.
Award issued:
Upon successful completion of both the theoretical and practical assessments for this nationally recognised training, students will be awarded a Statement of Attainment for:
- HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- HLTAID010 - Provide basic emergency life support
- HLTAID011 - Provide first aid
- HLTAID013 - Provide first aid in remote or isolated site
Course Delivery:
This course utilises a Mixed Mode format and requires the following:
- Online Learning Module: Approximately 4-6 hours to complete.
- Face-to-Face Practical Assessment: Approximately 8 hours.
- Course Enrolment Window: 90 days. You have a maximum of 90 days to complete both online and practical components.
- Assessments: Submitted through our online learning portal.
- Learning Materials: Provided via our online learning portal.
- Equipment: Provided for all practical assessments.

- Special Requirements:
- Perform CPR on adult and infant mannequins for at least 2 minutes each (physical activity).
- Ability to kneel on the floor for extended periods is required. If unable to do so, you may not be able to complete the course.
- Wear comfortable clothing suitable for the activities.

This course requires specific skills in language, literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy. The Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) defines the following required levels:
