Course Information

This course covers the workers who provide initial pre-hospital and out-of-hospital basic health care response and assessment to patients requiring urgent medical services. The provision of urgent clinical care includes providing basic life support. The qualification applies to people working in a variety of roles within the health care system. In Victoria, you may also partner with an Ambulance Attendant (Diploma qualified) to respond to non-urgent 000 calls for Ambulance Victoria.

This training builds your confidence and equips you with the skills to manage emergencies and provide immediate patient care.

The Australian Resuscitation Council advises that you should update your first aid every 3 years to maintain currency. They also advise that the CPR, Pain Management, and Advanced Resuscitation components of this course be updated every 12 months.

Course Delivery:

This course utilises a Mixed Mode format and requires the following:

  • Online Learning Modules: these can take up to 12 months to complete, depending on your individual study commitment.
  • Face-to-Face Practical Assessment: Two mandatory two-day and one mandatory one day practical assessment sessions are required.
  • Practical Assessment Sessions are typically held on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 5pm.
  • Block 1 Practical Assessment Sessions are held in Melbourne and Newcastle.
  • Block 2 Practical Assessment Sessions are held in Melbourne ONLY.
  • Block 3 Practical Assessment Sessions are held in Melbourne and Newcastle.
  • A documented clinical workplace placement of at least 80 hours of work, under clinical supervision in which you will be required to perform the activities outlined in your placement logbook.
  • Course Enrolment Window: 1 year. You have a maximum of 1 year to complete both online and practical components.
  • Assessments: Submitted through our online learning portal.
  • Learning Materials: Provided via our online learning portal.
  • Equipment: Provided for all practical assessments.

  • Special Requirements:
    • Perform CPR on adult and infant mannequins for at least 5 minutes each (physical activity).
    • Ability to kneel on the floor for extended periods is required. If unable to do so, you may not be able to complete the course.
    • Note this is a physical activity. You will be required to lift patients and stretchers into and out of an ambulance, wheelchairs and beds.
    • Wear comfortable clothing suitable including long pants and safety footwear for the activities.
    • You will be required to organise your own clinical work placement.
    • Some placement providers charge a fee for this service and may require you to obtain uniforms prior to your placement which will usually require safety footwear.
    • Times for clinical placement may vary between providers and may require you to work shifts outside of normal working hours. Maximum shift time within any 24 hour period is 12 hours. Students on placement are not permitted to work between the hours of 2300 to 0500 hours. Placement shifts lengths may vary depending on the provider and supervision availability

You can book your practical assessment sessions after completing the corresponding online modules:

  • Practical Session 1: After completing the online modules for the following units:
    • HLTAID014, HLTAID015, HLTAAP001, HLTINF006, HLTWHS002, HLTWHS006, PUAEME008
  • Practical Session 2: After completing practical session 1 and the online modules for the following units:
    • HLTOUT001, HLTOUT007, HLTOUT010, HLTWHS005
  • Practical Session 3: After completing practical session 1 and 2 and the online modules for the following units:
    • HLTAAP002, HLTOUT004, HLTOUT008

Prerequisite Units:

  • You will be required to complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) Skills Assessment as part of your enrolment process
  • There are no additional prerequisite units

Learner Requirements

To complete this course, you will need:

  • A computer or laptop with internet access.
  • A web browser (like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge).
  • A valid personal email address (shared addresses are not allowed). If you don't have one, consider creating a free Gmail account.
  • Access to:
    • A digital camera or phone with camera facilities
    • A webcam or phone with video/audio facilities
    • For practical session 2 & 3 you also will require a stethoscope.

All Registered Training Organisations are required, as a mandatory part of your enrolment process, to assess your language, literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy (LLND) skills.

We administer these tests online to verify if you have the necessary skills to complete this course. If you successfully complete these tests, you will be automatically allowed to complete your enrolment and pay for your course.

If your LLND level does not meet the requirements for the course, we will contact you to discuss the steps forward depending on the level assessed. This may include additional pre-learning material or a referral to a specialist LLND service.
